Continue building a bridge between your practice, your action research and what you are learning. Share what inspires you, observations, reflections, experiences, connections, dilemmas.... FOCUS: You may consider the elements of ‘SITE’ and the needs of your learners or audience(s). How does SITE apply to you as a learner?
Joe cited the following quotation in his blog, “People will learn when it’s important to them and when they’re ready for it.” This really resonated with me as well. He spoke about reluctant learners and students who'd come up through years of the system having internalized that they are "Bad at math/english/whatever." This was a dirrect connection to my DQ focus. My whole purpose is looking at students who are reluctant (and struggling) readers and working on ways to support them. If they don't like to read, then they won't, and if they won't read, then they won't get any better at reading. I'm looking at how can I change things so that those students who don't like to read, will like it.
I'm also trying to keep in mind that for some of them it's a can't issue, and for some it has developed into a won't issue. I think that teachers sometimes lose sight of their student's motivation it's nice to have the SITE model to remind ourselves. It's also important to remember that even if the won't has developed because of a long history of unsuported can't, it's still a won't problem when it comes to motivation and helping to 'solve the problem.'
